The World’s Most Famous Hacker, Kevin Mitnick, provided valuable insights about the theory and practice of social engineering to attendees of the 2016 American Small Business Cybersecurity Xchange Conference presented by CyberRx. Mitnick’s presentation was akin to a technology magic show of the latest hacking techniques. He educated and informed while keeping attendees on the edge of their seats. He also provided expert commentary on issues related to information security, and increased the audience’s security awareness.
“Kevin was vital to getting our message across—that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are particularly vulnerable to cyber-attacks, yet most are uninformed about the risk. As much as 60 percent of SMBs go out of business within six months of a cyber-attack. So, we asked Kevin to demonstrate to chief executive officers (CEOs) and their executive teams, in real time, how companies’ data is being stolen and what they can do to protect themselves,” said Ola Sage, CEO of CyberRx, the conference host. “Cybersecurity is not just a technical issue. Policy and financial decisions have to be made that effect the entire company,” she added.
Eighteen leading cybersecurity and small business experts also briefed more than 100 attendees about cybersecurity risks, and the roles and responsibilities of senior leadership in protecting their company’s brand, reputation and legal liability. Speakers included Mark Rasch, Security Evangelist at Verizon; Natalia Olson-Urtecho, Regional Administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration; and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST’s) Adam Sedgewick, Senior Information Technology Policy Advisor and lead author of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework. Montgomery County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett provided opening remarks.
The Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) was the platinum sponsor for the event, which was held October 4 in Silver Spring, Maryland.
